When Should You Book a Newborn Photoshoot? The 5 to 21 Day Window
Of all the questions parents ask us, this one has the clearest answer. The best window for a posed newborn photoshoot is 5 to 21 days after birth, and there are real reasons why.
Why 5 to 21 days
- Sleep. Babies this age sleep deeply and often, which is when those curled, peaceful poses happen.
- Flexibility. Newborns still curl into womb like positions naturally. The classic curled poses get harder after week three.
- Skin. Newborn skin is clearest in this window, before baby acne usually appears around weeks three and four.
Missed the window? Do not panic
We photograph plenty of babies at four, six, even ten weeks. The style simply shifts from curled and posed to lifestyle, with awake eyes, baby wearing and family cuddles. Some of our favourite born baby photography frames are of six week olds looking straight at the lens.
How to plan it before baby arrives
- Book in your third trimester. We pencil sessions against your due date, around month seven or eight.
- Confirm after delivery. Message us in the first couple of days and we fix the exact date.
- Choose studio or home. Our baby photo studio has heated sets and a full prop wardrobe. At home sessions are gentler on mum and capture the nursery you made.
A note on safety. Always ask any photographer about newborn safety training. Babies should never be left unsupported. Advanced poses are created as composite images, with a parent hands in frame the whole time.
What about the parents?
You are in the photos too, even if you have not slept. Parent and sibling frames are part of every newborn session we shoot, and twenty years from now they are the ones you will treasure most.
